Gloomy wednesday

theatrandu 2011.07.21. 11:51

1, 2, 3, 4, ...., 20, 21!

All said.

This was the official opening ceremony of Thealter'11.

There was a huge interest in Pintér Béla and Company's Never Return Again. Tickets sold out two days before the performance, "standing tickets" for the lucky ones. I missed out on this one. I met the piano tuner, Zsófia Szamosi, who played also in Tuesday's docudrama and I could hear some intriguing melodies of the capitalist play.

Maybe next time the secret reveals.

The Mother's Face is Dark as Marsh

I was really looking forward to Monchichi Study Group's 16+ puppet performance.

One word

theatrandu 2011.07.19. 23:20

I am sure a single word cannot destroy our relationship! (…) Today we walked again. He said he will break up with me because I am not normal. And he can only make out with somebody with whom he could envisage his future, common children. And he could not imagine our little half-gypsy children. So what should I do, if I like the normal Hungarian white guys? - saiys the teenage girl, who had bleached her skin, dyed her hair blond and put contact lenses to deceive his boyfriend – who happens to hate gypsies.

And so it started. With a docudrama.  Thealter’11/U21. It's true.
PanoDráma’s Word for Word is merely holding  a mirror to society; echoing ideas that we all have heard - that we know...we know too well. It shocks without freaking you out too much: the actors somehow subdue the atrocity of the 2008-2009-attacks on Gypsies. Thus we still get a chance to breathe through and contemplate. We think about politics, we think about future. Reality often seems like a joke. So should we laugh?

“Szebb jövőt” – can we hope for a better future?

The straight line is ungodly

theatrandu 2011.07.17. 10:38

What is common between a stage photo exhibition, excellent graphics, a private “Meditation”-collection and Hundertwasser? Right, nothing. Yet, it has an explanation, said Róbert Nátyi, the art director of REÖK: the Szeged Open-Air Festival celebrates its 80th birthday!

"There are no colours you can buy which have a feeling and a life. This is one of the secrets of my paintings."

Did you know that Friedrich Stowasser, a.k.a. Friedensreich Regentag Dunkelbunt Hundertwasser has not only designed buildings? The Reök-palace exhibits almost a hundred of the great Art Nouveau-architect’s pictures born in the 1960s – 1980s

5-4-2-dance!

theatrandu 2011.07.07. 12:22

Some time ago I watched 5kettőnek (~5 for two) @ Alterra. Well, you need to be in an empty, meditative state of mind in order to fully enjoy the choreography of Dénes Döbrei and Henrietta Varga. Through the minimalistic motions and slow storyline, the naturalistic sounds draw your attention to little details.

The dance piece raises two important questions:

What is in the box? How long does a leaking sack of water last?

June 19-24

Thealter, the international alternative theatrical festival of Szeged will start soon. Due to some changes you might be aware about, they are still working on the final program. Some interesting workshops, off performances and crazy parties are guaranteed. Details coming REAL soon, keep tuned!

Chastity belt for the long night

theatrandu 2011.06.24. 11:10

This is the night when ANYTHING can happen – I used to iterate happily as a child. In fact, I still believe so...

As every year around Midsummer night, Hungary will celebrate the Long Night of Museums this weekend. Not only can you visit the exhibitions in extraordinary hours but you are also being entertained the whole evening: fashion show, folk dance, fire jugglers, concerts and workshops await you between 6 PM and 1 AM on the 25th of June (Saturday).

Secret tip - without taboos

The 'reel' suspence story

theatrandu 2011.06.23. 11:10

Some weeks ago we already wrote about some revolting tendencies in Budapest: the government has decided to cut the wings of all alternative civil institutions, or so it seems. The trend continues in Szeged…

SZIN goes international: from Sean Paul to Russkaja

theatrandu 2011.06.09. 10:36

Having recently complained about the poor supply of international bands at SZIN'11 (meaning merely N.O.H.A. ), the organisers quickly came up with some surprises. Apart from the already mentioned programmes, the event is now underpinned with some more international names: the French Canadian punk/rock band Simple Plan, the Belgian elecronic artist from Madrid, Jimmy Van M, the British breakbeat-DJ Hyper, the American r'n'b popstar Kelis and the beloved jamaican reggae/dancehall guy, Sean Paul will also visit the City of Sunshine.

Last years' big hit

Puppets of the world make (up) a child smile

theatrandu 2011.06.01. 20:56

Make every day children’s day! – says it. The puppet theater of Szeged and Subotica tried to make this wish come true – at least for a week. During the II. Festival of Children’s Theater in May puppets Serbia, Romania, Russia, Armenia, Germany, and such remote countries as Peru and Brazil invaded the city. Free of charge, all the children were welcome to the 10 different shows.

World music and indie - SZIN-scheme ‘11

theatrandu 2011.05.27. 10:31

The Szegedi Ifjúsági Napok (Days of the Youth of Szeged, also known as SZIN) is probably Hungary’s oldest, still existing musical festival. It dates back to ‘68. 1968, an Olympic year. The times of youth protest in the West and political relief behind the iron curtain. The year when some British musicians decided to gang up for some good tunes. (Btw, later they became known as Deep Purple and Queen.) And nobody had heard of Woodstock when we already had our SZIN.

After a short break of stormy times it revived in 2003. The eclectic last-minute program sketch demonstrates that in the past 8 years the SZIN-organizers could not really decide, whether they wanted a show of Hungarian underground artists, a nostalgic festival for the older generations (think of last year’s Scooter, or Edda in 2011), or a clone of Hungary’s leading festival. Guys, less is more, really!

August 24-28.

I am happy to announce that my favourites from 2010 return to Szeged in August.
