Ladybug throws gran 60h birthday party - - - everybody's invited!

theatrandu 2011.03.07. 19:15

In memoriam 6 years on FM89.9

Exactly 6 years ago, in a small garage on the József Attila Av. …
Let me proudly present you Rádió MI. Proudly, because I have been working there, I have been a member of this community for some years. I say community, because it is a so-called community radio or free radio. What does this mean?
MI can have two meanings in Hungarian: what or we. And how do WE define a community radio? For us it means that we value content over form. It means that anybody of “common value” can come and share their thoughts. It means that we are not bound to commercial goals or political ideology. It means that everybody works voluntarily – simply out of love. Unbelievable, isn’t it. It means that decisions are made democratically – and it still works! It means that we represent voices that are not heard in mainstream media, subcultures that are unknown to the big public. How the hell do we do this?

Underground music & verbal masturbation

Well, we have had some talkies: about local happening, about culture, about cultures, literature or even science – mostly in Hungarian, sometimes in English or Spanish. Why not? We have had numerous DJs in various genres: hip hop, indie, underground electronic music, metal, jazz, funky -  just to categorize a few of the today running programmes. We help media students to get some real “on air” experience. The red lights go on, you turn on the mike, tune the pot and you just start talking, you play with your voice (one of my colleagues calls this VERBAL MASTURBATION), you stop and start again… This feeling is incomparable!

The adventures of the Ladybug
Did I mention that our logo is a ladybug (ladybird for the British)? Look at it carefully, and you will see, why. In these 6 years of existence that little creature made it to a number of places: on the way from Budapest to Bamako, at the SZIN, Thealter and Dörögd festivals, and at some venues in neighbouring countries as well. Furthermore, guests from all over the world spread the bug-message. But not only in good times, the ladybug appears in bad times as well. Just think of the toxic red mud disaster last year in Devecser.

Yes, you may…!
Sometimes we open the secret doors to the public: the regular Rádió Mi days from Jazz Kocsma or Grand Café give an insight to our everyday life in the studio. The live broadcast from local events and festivals give space to a very special sensitivity to instantness. Every summer the staff converts FM 89.9 into Thealter Radio for one week to report from Szeged’s international “off off broadway” (let’s call it simply ‘alternative’) theatrical festival. We organize common events, movements, festivals, professional forums with other free radios. Sharing experience is not only useful; it’s so much fun, too.

We do all this in hope to attract not only listeners but potential participants as well. Because you may…! We believe that everybody can have something valuable to say. So if you have a good idea on a long term or you just have something important to share with the world, contact us! Why not at the birthday festival? Mouthdeejays, listen carefully, the bug-mike is calling!

¡ 6TH BIRTHDAY OF RADIO MI, MARCH 11-13 !
Following the previous traditions, this year we would have to organize a festival of 7 days. But the sadly we have to confess that we are getting old too, not only the radio. Yes, many of the staff members are above 30 (note the insider joke)! So we decided to make 3-days of high-standard carefully selected programmes: concerts, live broadcast, parties… Here come the details, I bet you can’t wait:
March 11 (Friday) @ Jazz Kocsma
5pm: live talk show
6pm: Mouth-DJ-ing – catch the mike!
Are you public? Or a notorious self-observant? Funny, philosophical, sarcastic, provocative? Are you into beatbox, are you an mc, a troubadour or a gabbler? Here is your chance to express your opinion in 5 minutes. You can sign up or get more information at radiomi899 [at] gmail [dot] com.
8pm: Csillagtér concert – the psychedelic gaze

10pm: Headz, funk, broken beats and d’n’b with Suhov, Kő, Corp. and Suzuki Samurai.
2am: Radio Mi All-Stars

March 12 (Saturday) @ Grand Café
5pm: live talk show
6pm: Attention Chérie and Nemulass concerts - the indie bang
Later: idm, psy chill, deephouse and dubstep with Phalanx, Ryan, András Kocsik, J.A.M., Masa, Chriss P, Boc + Radio Mi All-Stars
11-12pm: Tombola (the charity tickets can be bought Friday and Saturday on the spot)

March 13 (Sunday) @ IH Café
Due to the Ladybug's bad luck with weather, the traditional recreative-regenarative, hangover-curing, proactiv, family friendly sports day and picnic (actually good old Hungarian bográcsozás) is NOT taking place this year! But if you want to imbibe more of Radio MI, you can find some of our electronic DJs at the IH Café - for Drum & Bass freaks the Neonlight (DE) is a must.
Happy birthday, Ladybug! :)
