This is the night when ANYTHING can happen – I used to iterate happily as a child. In fact, I still believe so...
As every year around Midsummer night, Hungary will celebrate the
Long Night of Museums this weekend. Not only can you visit the exhibitions in extraordinary hours but you are also being entertained the whole evening: fashion show, folk dance, fire jugglers, concerts and workshops await you between 6 PM and 1 AM on the 25
th of June (Saturday).
Secret tip - without taboos
Go to the Móra Ferenc Múzeum for a luscious experience. Leave the kids at home, since pasthe temporary exhibition on chastity belts is 16+! Legends and truth, secrets from the past about this piece of underwear... * After that, go and get lost in the sensous Botanic Garden - the night tour's starting at 10PM. With a torch you are safe, without one you will have more fun! ;)
Have you ever seen the illuminated Szeged from above? Well, it’s high-time then! Tickets available at 7PM at the Cathedral (Dóm), 8PM the tours start. It might sound romantic but you'd better start your warm-up for the step aerobic now!
St. Iván’s magical night
Midsummer night is celebrated all over Europe but the exact date varies in every culture. The pagan feast is still popular, and not only in the Nordic countries and among neo-pagans. Christians associate it with the nativity of John the Baptist, hence the other name Saint John’s night (Szent Iván éj in Hungarian) on the 21st/24th of June. In Hungary girls jump over the fire this night (of course guys only watch, you can guess, why) – those who succeed, will get married during the next farsang (carnival). Go for it!
In Szeged the used to throw an apple in the fire, which later was used as a medicine against sore throat or stomach-ache. This night you can find out about your future husband, understand the animal’s speech or become invisible.
This is the best night to pick Calendula (I bet you do it all the time) and this is the night when the witches gather. Beautiful Szegedi boszrokányok, shall we go to the Boszorkánysziget for some diabolic chants? :P
